If you are just getting into dirt bike riding or motocross, you may be looking at all the boots out there and trying to figure out what ones you should buy. It's important to have boots as part of your safety gear because you should always dress for the fall and not for the ride. So, what are some things that you should consider when you are buying a new pair of motocross boots?

Riding Style

Are you an aggressive rider or are you more conservative? If you are a rider who likes to go all out, then you are going to want to consider getting boots that are stiffer and offer more protection. Not only does aggressive riding put you at higher risk of falling, but your feet are also more likely to get hurt by things like stones or debris being thrown up and hitting your feet when you are off-road. Even the best groomed trails and tracks can have debris. Aggressive riding on the track isn't a bad thing, you just need to be wearing boots that are strong enough to protect you.

Riding Location

Like in real estate, location matters. While you may ride in several different places, there is generally one place where you ride more often. You may also tend to prefer a particular kind of terrain when you are riding. For example, if you like to ride in wetter areas, you will probably want to avoid plain leather and look for something that has waterproofing as part of its design. You will also want to make sure that the boots close in such a way that you aren't going to get water in them while you are out riding.

Protection Level

One big thing you need to consider is how much protection you want. That includes how high up you want the boot to go. The higher up the boot goes, the more protection you have. However, boots that go very high up your shins may make you feel like you have compromised the mobility at your ankle. You need to have some flexibility at your ankle so that you can ride, but too much flexibility means that you are sacrificing protection. If you end up laying down your bike, you can really injure your foot.

Motocross and dirt biking can be a lot of fun. But it's important to make sure that you have all the appropriate safety gear. For help choosing the right boots for your needs, check out a retailer like Bob's Cycle & Snowmobile Supply.
